It's no coincidence that staff in Ward 5A at Yorkhill chose to officially open their brand new ward on Valentines Day…what could be better for the people who provide care for children from all over Scotland with heart conditions? It will be a day to remember when staff and patients, old and new, join together with families and celebrities to mark the opening of the new facility. At a cost of approximately £100 000, the ward has been totally renovated providing a bright, cheery and child friendly atmosphere for some of Scotland's most seriously ill children. Senior Staff Nurse Lesley McCombe said:

"The obvious improvements are the décor and underwater themed bathroom which the kids and the staff love, but we have also introduced changes that will improve clinical care, such as creating a purpose built high dependency area within the ward."

Yorkhill is the centre for cardiac surgery & interventional cardiology for children from all over Scotland. Approx. 900 cardiology patients are seen each year between the medical and surgical cardiology specialists. Every aspect of the ward has been renovated including the children's playroom which was brightened up thanks to funding from the Association for Children with Heart Disorders - a support group for patients and families. The official opening promises to be fun for everyone, with cakes and drinks and a magician for the kids. Suzie McGuire from Radio Clyde will be visiting along with Ford Kiernan from "Chewin' the Fat" to make the day extra special.

Notes for Editors:
  • 14th February is also National Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Day

  • The Association for Children with Heart Disorders provides families and patients with help through hospital social work departments, information books/leaflets, contact with other families, as well as specific teenage and young adults groups amongst many other services.

You are invited to send a photographer/reporter to the official opening for opportunities with ward staff and patients old and new. Availability of Suzie McGuire/Ford Kiernan will be dependent on the time of their arrival.
