Carbon Monoxide test at your antenatal booking visit:
When you attend the antenatal clinic for you first visit, the midwife will test your level of carbon monoxide (CO). This is part of your routine antenatal care. The test is simple – you are asked to blow into a machine which will provide a CO reading. This reading will tell you and the midwife how much carbon monoxide is in your system. If your CO reading is high, you will be referred to the Smokefree Pregnancy Service. An advisor will contact you to take about your smoking, they will discuss the benefits of stopping smoking for you and your baby. They will also let you know what help there is for you if you feel ready to stop smoking.
If you would like to receive support from the Smokefree Pregnancy Service, a stop smoking advisor will arrange to see you for a one off face to face appointment in one of the clinics and they will discuss with you the best way for you to stop smoking.
