Trade Winds Primary School Programme

What is Trade Winds?

'Trade Winds: Learning About Tobacco' is an interdisciplinary resource pack for primary schools which was developed as part of the Scottish Government's Equally Well Test Site Area for tobacco control in Whitecrook, Clydebank.

The resource takes a new approach to tobacco education and extends across all of the curriculum areas and health and wellbeing guidance in Curriculum for Excellence. The programme is targeted at Primary 5 to Primary 7 pupils (Level 2, Curriculum for Excellence) and is designed to enable children to extend their learning beyond the health impact of tobacco to a consideration of broader tobacco issues. The pack comprises:

  • Topic A - Setting the Scene
  • Topic B - History of Tobacco
  • Topic C - Health Effects of Smoking
  • Topic D - Secondhand Smoke
  • Topic E - Cost of Tobacco (Global and Local)
  • Topic F - Influences on Smoking (Media and Peer Pressure)
  • Topic G - Extending Children's Learning Through the Arts

How do I access it?

We have printed folders of the packs and two are being sent to all mainstream schools in Greater Glasgow & Clyde.

Additionally you can download all of the lesson plans and documents associated with the pack to update the contents each year.

Guidance for delivering the programme

It is recommended that delivery starts with 'Topic A – Setting the Scene' as this introduces learning on tobacco and gathers children's knowledge on the topic. Teachers may then wish to explore a particular topic based on pupils' interests or to select lessons from each topic. Further support and information, as well as resources to support the delivery of the lessons are available by contacting [email protected] or 0141 201 4627.

We offer CPD for Trade Winds - please check your CPD calendar or contacts us on the details above to enquire.
