Carbon Monoxide test at your antenatal booking visit:
When you attend the antenatal clinic for you first visit, the midwife will test your level of carbon monoxide (CO). This is part of your routine antenatal care. The test is simple – you are asked to blow into a machine which will provide a CO reading. This reading will tell you and the midwife how much carbon monoxide is in your system. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas which is breathed in through tobacco smoke. It reduces the amount of oxygen for you and your baby. If your CO reading is high, you will be referred to us. An advisor will contact you to discuss your smoking, advise the benefits of stopping smoking for you and your baby, and let you know about the help that is available to stop smoking.
