Forensic mental health services are for people with a mental illness or learning disability who may be a risk to themselves or others because of their medical condition. The Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 places a requirement on NHS Boards to ensure that patients with a mental illness are able to be treated in facilities which meet their needs and are not subject to higher levels of security than they require.
Low secure inpatient mental health services are currently provided at Leverndale Hospital.
Medium secure care is delivered at Rowanbank, a specialist forensic mental health hospital.
Community outreach services are provided by clinicians working in specialist multidisciplinary teams to provide care in the community.
