Why is physical activity important?

Regular physical activity halves your risk of having a stroke. With almost two thirds of men and three quarters of women in Glasgow not doing enough physical activity to stay healthy it makes physical in-activity the most common risk factor for stroke.

What are the benefits of physical activity?

Physical activity can:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Create a healthy balance of blood fats
  • Reduce the chance of developing diabetes
  • Help you to control diabetes if you already have it
  • Help you to lose weight if you are overweight
  • Make you feel more energetic
  • Help relieve stress
  • Lower the risk of osteoporosis (thinning of the bones)
  • Help you to relax
  • Help older people to stay independent, or become more independent

The good news is that people who do the least amount of physical activity have the most to gain, whatever age they are. For more information about how to safely and effectively increase your physical activity levels click here.
