Introduction

People who smoke have a greater chance of developing heart disease or having a heart attack compared to non-smokers.  Smoking also carries the risk of  developing other conditions such as cancer, and respiratory (lung) disease.

The heart is especially vulnerable to smoking.  Carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas found in tobacco smoke, binds to blood where oxygen should be so the heart has to work harder to get enough oxygen round the body and also to the heart muscle itself. Carbon monoxide also makes it easier for cholesterol to pass through into blood vessels & cause the fatty build up: this can lead to heart disease, angina & increases the chances of having a heart attack or stroke.
