Why is physical activity important?

The heart is basically a muscle and like other muscles in the body it needs exercise to keep it fit in order for it to work efficiently.

What are the benefits of physical activity?

Being physically inactive doubles your risk of coronary heart disease. With almost two thirds of men and three quarters of women in Glasgow not doing enough physical activity to stay healthy it makes physical inactivity the most common risk factor for heart disease. People who have been physically active are more likely to survive the heart attack compared with people who have not been active.

Physical Activity can benefit your health in other ways;

  • Helping to lower blood pressure
  • Reducing the chance of developing diabetes
  • If you already have diabetes, physical activity can help you to control it.
  • It helps you to lose weight if you are overweight.
  • It can make you feel more energetic
  • It helps relieve stress
  • It can lower the risk of osteoporosis (thinning of the bones)
  • It can help you to relax,
  • It can help older people to stay independent, or become more independent.

The good news is that people who do the least amount of physical activity have the most to gain, whatever age they are. If you would like to learn more about becoming more physically active, visit the Physical Activity section.
