Unauthorised Absence

What you need to know about managing unauthorised absence...

  • Managers have a duty of care to contact employees who have not turned up for work on a scheduled work day.
  • Contact can be via telephone, through next of kin, by visiting them at home, or in extreme cases where there is concern, by contacting the police.
  • You must make all reasonable attempts to contact them and if the attempts remain unsuccessful, managers will write out to the employee asking them to contact by a defined date.
  • If the absence continues to be unauthorised, managers may stop all pay to the employee and confirmation of this will be given in writing.
  • Continued failure by the employee to contact their manager or attend work without a reason may lead to further action under the disciplinary policy.
