Managing Investigations

Course overview:

The course is designed to to give practising managers in the acute division an understanding of the interface between Significant Clinical Incident reporting and investigative enquiry techniques. The session will raise awareness of RCA tools and ‘good’ enquiry techniques which can be used in a range of different types of investigations. When combined effectively each can be used to underpin an investigation and enable staff to provide ‘accurate and detailed evidence’ in reports and recommendations during investigatory processes.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, participants will:

  • Be aware of the RCA tools and their use during investigations
  • Appreciate the relevant legislation and local policies; and how these may impact on motivation and participation by individuals involved in investigations
  • Be aware of the potential issues and be able to manage the impact on the’ whole team’ that may arise during investigations
  • Understand and utilise good questioning techniques and listening skills when interviewing staff
  • Be able to analyse and interpret information gained through statements and interviews
  • Understand the managers responsibility in leading on and coordinating the investigation of Significant Clinical Incidents
