Specialist vaccine technician Karen Pawelczyk has picked up the AAH Pharmacy Technician Professional Award for co-ordinating a project to review the storage and handling of childhood vaccines in every GP surgery in NHSGGC. The project came about following concerns across Scotland that vaccines may not have been stored properly.
Karen organised a programme of self audit for all GP practices and contributed to education and training events as part of a six-month secondment. Her work to put this project into place and the changes and improvements that have resulted directly from it led to specialist public health protection pharmacist Liz McGovern to nominate Karen for the award.
Karen said: “I am absolutely delighted to receive this award. The project itself was a great piece of work which has made positive changes to the organisation. Coupled with the new pharmacy distribution centre we have made great progress within pharmacy recently.”
On a day-to-day basis Karen concentrates on providing specialist technical advice on vaccine storage and handling, manages vaccine audits within GGC practices and ensures procedures are in place and adhered to maximum protection when vaccinating.
