The centre is home to three GP practices and two dental practices as well as physiotherapy and podiatry services, health visitor and district nursing teams along with social work and home care services. There will be a day care centre for older people with its own entrance and garden.
Mental health services for the whole of East Renfrewshire will be offered out of the new centre.
The Centre has been built on the site of the old Calibar Primary School. It is next to the Council Offices on Main Street.
The building has been designed to consume a very low level of energy. In addition to generous standards of insulation, heating in winter and cooling in summer will be assisted by free geothermal heat retrieved from the ground. Low energy artificial lighting has been specified throughout
The centre also has a selection of purpose designed works of art. One of the main pieces features an exterior tree and nest by Scottish artists Iain Kettles and Susie Hunter at the main entrance.
Community artwork inspired by the concept of nests as a place for nurture and protection, referencing both the past and the present history of Barrhead has also been included.
The works aim to put the new centre and health and wellbeing at the heart of the community and promote the imaginative role that artists can play in the creation of inspiring places.
