Glasgow Royal Infirmary, in the east of the city, provides a wide range of district general hospital, regional, supra-regional and national acute clinical services.

Since 2001 the Princess Royal Maternity and the Jubilee Building have been opened, providing accommodation for a new A & E department, a coronary care unit, an acute medical receiving unit and an orthopaedic surgery inpatient unit. The Canniesburn Plastic Surgery & Burns Unit has been located in the new building. It has six dedicated operating theatres and specialist inpatient and outpatient services.

Between 2010 and 2015, further work will ensure the Royal Infirmary will be fully equipped to serve as the main inpatient hospital for the north and east of the NHSGGC area.

A&E Fracture Clinic
General Tel: 0141 211 5146 / 5067
Accident and Emergency
This is an Emergency Department. We prioritise people who have a serious injury or accident or who have a sudden serious illness or medical condition. It may be more appropriate and you may be seen more quickly by your GP or another health care professional rather than waiting for treatment here.

If you think that someone's life is at risk you should call 999 right away.

IF you live in the catchment area for the Vale of Leven Hospital, New Stobhill Hospital or New Victoria Hospital, you can attend your local Minor Injury Unit (MIU) to get urgent care for a minor injury including sprains, burns and simple fractures.
MIUs are run by highly experienced Emergency Nurse Practitioners who will assess and either treat a minor injury or, if they find a more serious problem, arrange for you to be transferred elsewhere.

Children with serious illnesses and injuries who are less than one year of age should be taken to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill, Glasgow. Children from one year on should either go to your local A&E department or to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children.

You can find out more about which conditions may be seen and treated more quickly elsewhere from our Know who to turn to pages.
