A new multi-storey car park has now opened on the Southern General Hospital site. The facility offers 266 spaces including 30 disabled bays. Parking is free to all patients and visitors. On entering the hospital from Govan Road, drive straight ahead past A&E and the facility is situated on the left hand side of the road.

The Southern General Hospital is a large teaching hospital with an acute operational bed complement of approximately 900 beds. The Hospital is sited in the south-west of Glasgow and provides a comprehensive range of acute and related clinical services.
District General Hospital services are provided for the south-west of the city, with some services provided for the whole city. Services include Accident and Emergency, Dermatology, ENT, General Medicine (including sub-specialties), General Surgery (including sub-specialties), Medicine for the Elderly (including Assessment, Rehabilitation and Day Services), Gynaecology, Neonatal Paediatrics, Obstetrics, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Urology, Physically Disabled Rehabilitation and Continuing Care. The Obstetrics, Urology, Ophthalmology and Dermatology Departments provide the single in-patient location for the whole population of South Glasgow. The Division manages the Dermatology Service for the whole city.
The Maxillofacial Department for the whole city was centralised at the hospital in the autumn of 2002 providing trauma and elective surgery and specialist provision for head and neck cancer. South and West Glasgow’s in-patient Gynaecology service was centralised at the Southern General Hospital in late 2003 / early 2004, bringing together on one site a range of services from across the city. The Assessment and Rehabilitation service for the Physically Disabled is also provided for the whole city from the Southern General Hospital.
There is also a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services including Audiology, Clinical Psychology, Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, ECG, Physiotherapy, Radiology (including MRI and CT provision for the general hospital service) and Speech Therapy.
Be Ready For Baby!The Institute of Neurological Sciences
The Institute of Neurological Sciences is based on the Southern General campus and provides Neurosurgical, Neurological, Clinical Neurophysiology, Neuroradiological and Neuropathology facilities for the West of Scotland. The Institute is equipped with 2 Magnetic Resonance Imaging Suites, SPECT Scanner, two Computerised Axial Tomography Scanners, and angiography facilities. The Institute has recently undergone a major upgrade to incorporate ENT and Oral & Maxillofacial and is now equipped with additional facilities including the development of a new ward, four additional theatres, ICU, HDU and a new out-patient department.
Westmarc
The Westmarc unit houses the clinical services for prosthetics and orthotics including the Artificial Limb and Appliance Centre, within a purpose- built facility. The centre is staffed jointly by hospital and university personnel from the National Centre for Training in Prosthetics and Orthotics of Strathclyde University.
Podiatry
The department of Podiatry has a purpose built 24-chair clinic including a minor procedure theatre.
Spinal Injuries Unit
The Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Unit for Scotland provides a spinal injuries service to the whole of Scotland. This is housed in a purpose-built facility attached to the Institute of Neurological Sciences.
Education
There is a long tradition of training medical students and the Southern General is one of the principal teaching hospitals in Glasgow. There are fully equipped conference facilities at the Walton Conference Centre on site and a range of other tutorial rooms throughout the hospital. There is also a Library with a Learn Direct E-Learning Centre.

IF you live in the catchment area for the Vale of Leven Hospital, New Stobhill Hospital or New Victoria Hospital, you can attend your local Minor Injury Unit (MIU) to get urgent care for a minor injury including sprains, burns and simple fractures.
MIUs are run by highly experienced Emergency Nurse Practitioners who will assess and either treat a minor injury or, if they find a more serious problem, arrange for you to be transferred elsewhere.
Children with serious illnesses and injuries who are less than one year of age should be taken to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill, Glasgow. Children from one year on should either go to your local A&E department or to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children.

1.) A 6 bed / 6 cot regional Mother and Baby Mental Health Unit which provides suitable facilities for a woman with severe acute mental illness to be admitted for treatment, where it’s also in the best interests of her baby to come into hospital with her. The unit accepts admissions of women living in Glasgow and adjacent NHS Board areas Lanarkshire, Ayrshire and Arran, Dumfries and Galloway, Western Isles and the former Argyll and Clyde boundary areas. Referral is through local psychiatric services in the NHS Board area or via any health or social care professional if the woman lives in Glasgow.
2.) Community Outreach Service for women living within the former NHS Greater Glasgow boundary area.
3.) Out patient clinics at 3 sites around the city.
4.) Psychiatric liaison services to the Southern General Maternity Unit and the Princess Royal Maternity Unit.

Prosthetics
The Prosthetics service provides upper and lower limb prosthetics services to approximately 52% of Scotland’s population. It functions as a self contained area within WestMARC. The inpatients for this service are mainly based at The Southern General Hospital whilst outpatients, approximately 3,500, come mainly from Greater Glasgow & Clyde, Argyll, forth valley, Lanarkshire, Dumfries & Galloway and some other Scottish Health Boards. The service has an average number of outpatient appointments per year of 6,500.
This service provides medical clinics, ward rounds and multidisciplinary clinic where new patients and referrals, approximately 300 per year, are assessed. Patients referrals are received by the service from:
Wheelchair and Seating Service (WSS)
The Wheelchair Service provides wheelchairs to people of all ages who have a long term disability that affects their mobility. We also provide specialist equipment for wheelchairs for postural support and pressure relief.
WestMARC is an NHS department within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde who provide wheelchair services to people in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Argyll Ayrshire and Arran, Dumfries and Galloway, Lanarkshire and Forth Valley Health Boards.
The WSS is the largest service provided by Westmarc with a caseload exceeding 42,000 wheelchair users. Clinics are conducted within the Centre and at many satellite locations across the West of Scotland. There has been significant growth in the therapy and bioengineering team over the last few years, the wheelchair and seating service now employs over 120 people and there is progress in delivering the service more locally across the West of Scotland area. The WSS is based at the WestMARC Centre, in the Southern General Hospital.
The services that we offer include clinical appointments and assessments as well as a telephone patient support service and these are provide by; Bioengineers, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Technical Officers and Administrative Staff.
The WestMARC Yoker Depot is responsible for ordering and storage of wheelchairs, accessories and spares, a refurbishment program and the fabrication or modification of equipment the Yoker depot is also responsible for the delivery, uplift and repair of wheelchairs of routine seating equipment.
