From a diagnostic point of view nuclear medicine investigations are similar to X-ray investigations in that a small amount of radiation is used.
Most of the scans undertaken in our departments use tracers with a short 'half-life' - this means that the tacer is only radioactive for a short period of time. Usually the tracer is injected into a vein in the arm and a picture is taken with a gamma camera.
