Govan Fair - 6th June 2008
'This year's Govan Fair will have a 6Oth Anniversary
theme. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde are once again sponsoring the
annual Govan Fair Schools Football tournament, the oldest in Glasgow.
Members of the New Childrens Hospital Youth Panel will be on hand
to present the trophies and medals to the winning team.
The Chair of the Govan Fair Association has paid
tribute to the NHS in her introduction to the Govan
Fair programme and the committee have included an editorial
in the programme which comments on the history of the Southern General
hospital and welcomes the redevelopment of the site in the future.
For their Govan Fair edition, The Govan Press
have printed a special
article which celebrates 60 years of the NHS and includes a
1940s style newspaper which gives people a flavour of how the formation
of the NHS might have been reported in Govan in 1948. The edition
also fast forwards to the future to highlight changes to the local
NHS.
The Southern General Hospital will once again
be participating in the annual Govan Fair procesion with a 60th
themed float. Pupils from Govan High School are making a birthday
cake that will form the base of the float, this will be complimented
by images from the Southern General's history. This year, as in
previous years, the Govan Fair will raise funds for the Southern
General Hospital patient's welfare. The people of Govan have always
been generous in supporting the hospital and this year will be no
exception, as always, our heartfelt thanks.
The procession will be on Friday 6th June, begining
at 7.45pm in Fairlie Street and making its way for 2.5 miles through
Govan accompanied by staff from the Southern General hospital.
