"Working together to strengthen culturally sensitive pathways in mental health care for asylum seekers and refugees"

Compass is dedicated to building the capacity of mental health services to provide culturally-sensitive healthcare for this client group. The service consists of a small multi-disciplinary mental health team led by Dr Anne Douglas, Consultant Clinical Psychologist.

Compass provides advice and consultation to primary & secondary care health services. The team also works closely with a range of partner organisations. In addition, the Compass team also provides a range of direct therapeutic interventions. Compass works with asylum seekers and refugees of all ages.

The Aims of the Team:

  • To ensure that asylum seeking people and refugees of all ages in Glasgow receive the most appropriate mental health care delivered in a culturally sensitive manner
  • To help build the capacity of other staff (in statutory, voluntary and other agencies) to provide mental health care to this client group through consultation, teaching and liaison
  • To provide a range of culturally sensitive therapeutic interventions for asylum seeking people and refugees with complex mental health needs
  • To work together with partner agencies to promote the integration of asylum seeking people and refugees in Glasgow
  • To work at a strategic level to highlight the specific health and wellbeing needs of this client group and to influence policy
