The Chief Scientists Office is based within the Scottish Government and is responsible for directing and funding research of relevance to patients and practitioners in the NHS, CSO supports funding in the NHS Scotland and offers training opportunities. It has a role identifying research priorities and developing a research strategy to support the creation of an evidence base for clinical effective practice. The CSO encourages a robust ethics and research governance infrastructure and includes public involvement in their decision making process. Multidisciplinary collaboratively research is encouraged and supported through a number of research units and other research initiatives in Scotland and UK wide. NHSGG&C Research Funding
This provides funding for research to take place within NHSGG&C Hospitals. Awards will be of an appropriate sum within the limits of the funds available made in categories of; Cancer, Chest Heart & Stroke, General and Renal medicine. Following restructuring of the delivery of services across NHSGG&C, appropriate research funds from all hospitals have been combined to form a new NHSGG&C wide Research Endowment Fund. Allocation of research funds will no longer be hospital-specific but will otherwise be awarded in agreement with the terms of the original bequests. This is not an exhaustive list of funding sources for instance there are many disease specific charity funding sources for reseasrch e.g. British Heart Foundation, Alzheimers Scotland, The Liver Trust.  Also medical libraries often have books/publications that have a list of medical charities that support research although many have very specific areas that they will support.
