Meet Caroline Kane! - Home Birth Team and Supervisor of Midwives

Hello. My name is Caroline Kane and I am a midwife on the Glasgow Home Birth Team.

Prior to training as a midwife I was a nurse in the intensive care unit of Glasgow Royal Infirmary. I completed my midwifery training in 1984 and worked in Glasgow Royal Maternity Hospital (the Rottonrow!) in various roles. I worked in postnatal, antenatal and labour wards as well as on community.

When Rottonrow closed I moved to the then new Princess Royal Maternity working in the midwives birthing unit as well as in the community. I have always had an interest in normal birth and a passion for supporting women through it. When the opportunity arose in 2009 to form a dedicated homebirth team for the women of Glasgow it was (and still is!) my dream job.

The Home Birth Team currently consists of 3 midwives dedicated to providing continuity of care to women requesting a home birth service. We provide antenatal care from whenever women are referred to us at whatever stage of pregnancy they decide it is what they want. We aim to provide continuity of care and carer and support women in their choices around pregnancy and birth. With the support of the wider community midwifery teams we provide an on call service and attend women in labour and throughout the birth process at home.

In the postnatal period we continue to provide support in health, parenthood and breastfeeding as the new family establishes before handing over to our health visiting colleagues.

As the demand for the service increases we would hope to extend the numbers in the team to provide the care that the women of Glasgow deserve at what is an exciting time in their lives

Regards,

Caroline
