July 2015 - Meet Julie Bruce!

Julie Bruce.JPG

My name is Julie Bruce and I am Senior Charge Nurse at Ward 2, Larkfield Unit, Inverclyde Royal Hospital.  I have been in post since November 2013.  Ward 2 is a 30 bedded elderly rehab and assessment ward.  My day as with all other SCN’s will vary depending on whether it is a supervisory day, management day or normal working day

Ward 2 is one of 4 test sites in GG&C for the Care Assurance and Accreditation Scheme (CAAS).  I first became aware of CAAS in June 2014 when I attended a session where staff from Salford spoke about their experiences.  I was also lucky enough to visit Salford to see firsthand how the standards worked in practice.

We are very excited to be part of the test phase for CAAS, I feel CAAS has helped us focus on where we want to go as a ward and the standards are what we always want to achieve for every patient in our care.

Welcome to my day!

8.30am – 10.30am

On arrival to the ward I do the rounds speaking to all staff members on duty and the patients.  Check if there are any issues that I need to know about or anything that needs my attention.

Assist any patients who require help or support with their personal care

Attend our staff “huddle” at 9am – no issues identified

Accompany the Consultant on the ward round at 9.30am...

11am – 12.30am

Assist the staff with lunch routine.

After completion of the ward round I have discussions with staff to delegate tasks and actions that now need to take place.

I meet with a family to discuss the care of a patient, they had some concerns before the meeting but the overall outcome of the meeting was positive...

1pm – 2.30pm

I attended a meeting to discuss staff sickness/absence

A further meeting with staff to discuss our Care Assurance and Accreditation Scheme (CAAS) audits.

Completion of 2 EKSF’s with staff members...

2.30pm – 4.30pm

I attended a SCN meeting with the Lead nurse

Checking emails...

Clerical work...

Check with staff no issues at this point before going home!!

I had previously worked in Orthopaedics for a number of years and 12 years ago I decided I wanted a change.  I became Bed Manager here at IRH and did this job for 6 or 7 years.  After this I applied for a job as Discharge Nurse, initially based at Southern General before moving back to IRH.  I worked as the discharge nurse for 3 years.

Having been away from the clinical area for 10 years I decided to apply for a job as a Senior Charge Nurse in ward 2, Larkfield Unit.

I have been here now for almost 2 years and can safely say no 2 days are ever the same!

I have been involved in the CAAS work since I attended a session last June then I was lucky enough to visit Salford to see the progress they had made there.

We are really pleased to be a test site for CAAS...

Kind regards

Julie
