Meet Nicola Mc Dowall - Community Staff Nurse!

Hi, my name is Nicola McDowall and I am a Community Staff Nurse at Plean Street Clinic in Yoker. I have been in post since April 2013.

As a Community Nurse we cover 3 GP surgeries in the North West area of Glasgow and our areas cover Partick, Knightswood, Bearsden, Clydebank and Yoker . My day as with all other Community Nurses will vary depending on the visits that are scheduled for that day. The nurses at Plean Street Clinic were the first cohort in the North West to roll out the Dell tablet and this has been a huge success in our workplace. We are now on our second phase of single point of access and very excited to be the first cohort to introduce this.

Welcome to my day!

8.30am –12.30am

Before my arrival to work I log onto my dell tablet to check my daily visits. I would then visit my diabetic patients before checking into our base at Plean Street. From here I return to base to check the telephone for any messages and to collect any equipment required for the patients that day. I visit patients who require district nursing input and visit GP surgeries to collect referrals.  I also liaise with GP’s regarding patients who require district nursing input and to discuss the care of palliative patients with them. I document the outcome of my visits on the dell tablet as soon as the visit is carried out.

1pm – 2.30pm

On return to base I check my telephone messages and deal with messages according to which team the patients are assigned to. If patient requires a visit urgently I would go out promptly and deal with the issue. I then have our lunch team meeting with band 6 and the other members of staff in the team to discuss our patients, if there are any complex or palliative patients they are also discussed as well as any other issues arising.

2.30pm – 4.30pm

If the Band 6 is unavailable we carry out the scheduling for the next day and sort out the visit cards amongst the wider team. If there is any time I will check my emails and  log onto Learn Pro and KSF for any outstanding work requiring to be carried out. I then visit my afternoon diabetic patients before finishing up my day.

Career Pathway:

I had previously worked in Accord Hospice for 4 years and two and a half years ago I decided I wanted a change. I applied for the post I am currently in as Community Staff Nurse and have been here since April 2013. I have been here now for nearly 2 1\2 years and can safely say no two days are ever the same! Through my role as community staff nurse I have had the opportunity to carry out my MSc in Leadership and my Mentorship course. I have been involved in the rollout of the dell tablet and we are really pleased to be the first cohort to rollout the second phase...

Kind regards,

Nicola
