Changes to respiratory testing at the West of Scotland Specialist Virology Centre

The WoSSVC will be changing its routine respiratory repertoire on Wednesday 11th of October 2017. The routine respiratory screen will consist of the following pathogens:

  • Influenza A
  • Influenza B
  • RSV
  • Adenovirus
  • Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

The TrakCare code:

  • Respiratory virus + Mycoplasma pneumoniae (Influenza A/B, RSV, adenovirus)

GP ICE code:  

  • Resp viruses + Mycoplasma Gargle
  • Resp viruses + Mycoplasma Sputum
  • Resp viruses + Mycoplasma Throat Swab


An extended test containing:

  • Coronaviruses
  • Rhinovirus
  • Parainfluenza virus-1-4
  • Human metapneumovirus (HuMP)

will still be available, but will be limited to patients admitted to ICU/critical care and for patients who are immunocompromised.

Should you require these additional tests on a patients outwith the aforementioned criteria they can be requested via discussion with the WoSSVC (Tel: 38722 / 0141 201 8722). These additional tests can be added onto the sample already received by the laboratory.

The WoSSVC will continue to offer Bordetella pertussis testing. This will be available for patients that fit the clinical criteria outlined in recent national guidance.

The West of Scotland Specialist Virology Centre (WoSSVC) is located in the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and is part of the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board.

We provide a full range of virology tests to our users and our development team are continuously updating and introducing new assays. 

WoSSVC User Manual (Version 11)

In addition to our routine repertoire we are part of The Scottish National Blood Borne Virus Specialist Testing Service which provides specialist testing for blood borne viruses for Scotland. We are also responsible for testing respiratory specimens for national surveillance purposes.
