Clyde Sector Laboratory

Relocation of the Clinical Microbiology, General Practice Service, (Clyde Sector) to the Microbiology Laboratory, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow.

The Microbiology service provided to General Practice will transfer to Microbiology Laboratory, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH). The effective date of transfer will take place as from Monday 15th January 2018.

Please use the above QEUH telephone number for any enquiries and results.

 Your current specimen collection arrangements (times and uplifts) are unaffected by this change and the GP specimens will be directed to Microbiology Laboratory, QEUH.

Specimen collections

The introduction of new BLUE SPECIMEN COLLECTION BAGS is designed to facilitate the change in service by clearly allowing segregation of the Microbiology hospital specimens. The initial stock of these bags will be distributed to all clinical areas within RAH, IRH and VOL, thereafter, they will be available to order within PECOS.  Further communication with regard to the PECOS order product code will be circulated in due course.

Your specimen collection arrangements from ward / clinic areas will be affected by the introduction of dedicated blue specimen transport bags. ALL Microbiology specimens require to be placed in dedicated blue specimen transport bags for onward transfer to Microbiology G.R.I.

The pneumatic tube system MUST NOT be used for the transfer of Microbiology specimens as from the 15th January 2018.

URGENT & OUT OF HOURS SERVICE – CLYDE SECTOR MICROBIOLOGY

ALL - Urgent / Emergency Specimens

All urgent / emergency specimens for Microbiology will require to be sent by taxi following the protocol below for Out of Hours specimens refer to Table 1 below.

During normal working hours 08:30 to 17:00 please contact the microbiology laboratory to notify the laboratory of the urgent specimen using the appropriate number detailed in Table 2 below.

Microbiology Out of Hours service

The Microbiology Laboratory Out of Hours Service for Clyde Sector (emergency specimens outside core hours) will be provided from the Microbiology Laboratory, GRI.

In order to make ensure consistency of the process, the following instructions MUST be followed

As current practice

  1. Ward clinical staff MUST contact the on call Biomedical Scientist for the Microbiology Laboratory, GRI via the switchboard and arrange for the specimen to be transported to Microbiology Laboratory, GRI.  
  2. Taxi drivers MUST be instructed to deliver the Microbiology samples to the GRI Security Desk where a Microbiology Specimen Drop Box is located for the Biomedical Scientist to pick up the specimen PLEASE NOTE you must leave sufficient time for the sample to be transferred to the collection point where the taxi will collect the specimen

The Duty Sister or porter will take the specimen to the “Medical Assessment Unit” which is open 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Stock

The Microbiology stock items listed below can be replenished by contacting the Microbiology Laboratory, GRI on 0141 201 8551 

  1. Blood Culture bottles stock Stock replenishment is the responsibility of the portering department for each site and will be supplied directly from Microbiology, Laboratory GRI
  2. A stock of blood culture bottles will be held by the portering department at RAH, IRH and VOL for distribution to clinical areas as required.
  3. Quantiferon- TB Gold collection test tubesA stock level of Quantiferon, TB Gold collection test tubes will continue to be held in RAH ward 11 and the IRH outpatients department.The stock of Quantiferon, TB Gold collection test tubes will be supplied directly from Microbiology, Laboratory GRI 
  4. Viral Transport Medium

The stock of viral transport medium will be supplied directly from Microbiology, Laboratory GRI.

 RSV kits (applicable to Ward 15 only)

The stock of RSV kits will be supplied directly from Microbiology, Laboratory GRI.
