Major investment in Greenock and Clydebank approved
The Board of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde met today and gave the green light for a new health and social care centre in Greenock and another in Clydebank.

The “Outline Business Case” for each of the centres are now approved paving the way for the £21.2million investment in Greenock and a £19.3million investment in Clydebank.

The centres will make health and social care services more accessible to the local populations they serve and increase capacity and improve integration of services.

Mental health expansion backed
The Board also backed further investment in mental health services today with support given to a £10million expansion of the Rowanbank medium secure psychiatric unit on the Stobhill campus.

Plans to create an extra 18 beds– increasing the total capacity to 92 by the end of 2019 – will now proceed to an full Business Case before being submitted to the Scottish Government’s Capital Investment Group for consideration.

The meeting was told that the expansion was required to meet care demands and ensure a far more flexible and responsive service that would also deliver public protection benefits.

Health Promoting NHS
An encouraging report outlining the progress made across NHSGGC’s “secondary care settings” (acute hospitals) was delivered by our Director of Public Health.

Dr Linda de Caestecker outlined activity in the three key areas of : Person Centred Care; Staff Health and Wellbeing; and Hospital Environment. The detailed report highlights significant areas of activity including attrition rates for breastfeeding, alcohol brief interventions, areas of support for patients in financial stress, weight management and physical activity amongst other measures.

Queen Elizabeth cladding update
David Loudon, Director of Property, Procurement and Facilities Management, presented an update paper to the Board in relation to the review of NHS buildings in relation to issues emerging from the Grenfell Tower fire in London.

The Board were informed of the safety assurances and compliance assurances given to the NHS executive management team from fire safety experts but agreed with the decision taken last week to remove certain panels which are similar too, but not the same, as the ones used in Grenfell…for precautionary reasons and to ensure full public, staff and patient confidence that any perceived risk was being removed rather than mitigated.

The Board was informed that the Scottish Government had given a verbal assurance of financial cover to the Board for the costs of the cladding work which was welcomed by Board members.
