Councillor Michael O’Donnell, Convener of the Social Work Committee, East Dunbartonshire Council, is appointed from 16th July 2012 to 30th April 2016.
Cllr O’Donnell’s background is in psychiatric nursing. He qualified in the mid seventies and worked in various hospital settings across a number of sub specialities as a Charge Nurse / Ward Manager in Psycho Geriatrics, Acute Adult Psychiatry, and Addiction Services in East Dunbartonshire/Strathkelvin and the North of Glasgow. At this time, he also gained hospital management experience. As a staff representative he was involved in the Psychiatric Hospital Closure Programme.
In the early nineties he moved into the community working as a G grade Psychiatric Nurse (CPN), again, in various localities including south east Glasgow and South Lanarkshire. During this period he was involved as a facilitator in a number of training initiatives notably “The Rainbow Project”, a resource management tool that is to this day used as a reference tool by members of the Board’s Executive.
He left the employ of the Health Board in 2002 and in early 2004 joined Glasgow City Council Social Services Department where he is employed part time as a Qualified Worker (Field Work).
In his political life, he has served as an elected member for Bishopbriggs South in East Dunbartonshire since May 1997. He currently holds the position of Convener of Social Services. Internal to the Council he serves on a number of committees including Policy and Resources - Community Planning. External to the Council he serves on COSLA Health and Well Being Executive Group - North Strathclyde Community Justice Authority.
