An innovative new £10 million Health and Care centre has opened its doors today (Monday 24 February) in Possilpark.
The new modern, state-of-the-art health and care centre will provide a base for a range of services including: four GP Practices, general dental practitioner services, physiotherapy, podiatry, community dental services, community consulting rooms, district nursing, health visitors, social work, addiction services and health improvement teams offering a range of services from smoking cessation support to information on health screening.
Other services will also have the opportunity to use the community consulting rooms offering local people access to additional services including primary care mental health services and money advice.
In addition to services within the Centre a fantastic new community garden and open space area is also being planned where local people will be able to take part in a range of outdoor activities.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, the Forestry Commission and Scottish Natural Heritage have teamed to offer a project - the ‘Green Exercise Partnership’ designed to encourage people to take part in outdoor activities.
As part of this project, plans for the outdoor space at the new centre include a wild meadow, an urban gym wall and a community growing space which will have vegetable and flower beds, a greenhouse and its very own community gardener. This project aims to support local people, patients and families to develop their gardening skills while increasing their activity levels.
Local people will also have the added benefit of being able to grow affordable and good quality fruit and vegetables fresh from the community garden.
Andrew Robertson, Chairman of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: "This is an outstanding local initiative. We are extremely pleased that this new health and care centre is complete and that the people of Possilpark now have a wonderful modern facility.
"It is also good news about the Green Exercise Partnership which aims to help improve people’s health by encouraging outdoor activities."
The Health and Care Centre is part of phase one of a new regeneration process underway for the area, and at the heart of a new civic centre being created which will transform the area’s physical environment and improve health and healthcare facilities.
Alex Mackenzie, Interim Director, Glasgow City Community Health Partnership (CHP), added: "It has always been important to Glasgow City CHP that the investment in a new health centre should do much more than merely provide a base for NHS services.
"We want this new health and care centre to make a real contribution to the regeneration of the whole Possilpark area. Building the centre alongside the new business development which includes 10,000 sq foot of office and business accommodation that is being taken forward by Jobs & Business Glasgow in partnership with ng homes, means that we are able to maximise the impact of our collective investment – and provide a strong focus for a positive future."
Local resident and member of North West Public Partnership Forum, Sadie Gordon (73), said: "I really like the modern design - the glass front makes it light, warm and welcoming and is such a good location being next to a bus stop at the centre of the community. Having all the services and modern health facilities in one place will make a big difference to local people."
