The largest laboratory contract in the world was signed yesterday in Glasgow.

The contract, worth more than £100 million over seven years, will provide lab services across Greater Glasgow and Clyde with the necessary reagents to deliver diagnostic services for biochemistry, haematology, microbiology, genetics and pathology with clear financial and clinical benefits for the duration of the contact.

The contract with Abbott Diagnostics will also deliver the most advanced cutting edge technology including equipping the new super lab on the Southern General campus due to open in spring 2012.

This multi-million pound contract means rapid round the clock results with patient samples being processed even more quickly and efficiently.

Robert Calderwood, Chief Executive, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said: “The importance of signing this contract with Abbott Laboratories cannot be underestimated.

“This is the largest laboratory contract in the world and we are delighted Abbott Diagnostics are being awarded this contract as they are world leaders in their field.

“Our clinical, technical and managerial staff have worked hard to ensure the multi-million pound contract, the first of its kind in the world, will deliver a managed service which will demonstrate clear financial and clinical benefits for the duration of the seven year contact.
