Innovative House Buyer Scheme Sees NHS Staff Move Closer to New SGH Campus

The first nurses are moving into their dream homes in advance of the completion of the £842 million New South Glasgow Hospital Campus.

An innovative joint service between NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC), NHS Credit Union, Glasgow Credit Union and Cruden Homes is helping NHS staff access affordable mortgage and deposit loans and Hannah Buist, a paediatric nurse at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children (RHSC) is one of the first to take advantage of the service.

Hannah and her partner Graeme had been looking to buy a new home and thanks to this service, known as Unique Property Solutions (UPS), they have now moved into a new one bedroom apartment in Govan close to the hospital campus.

Ian Reid, NHSGGC’s Director of Human Resources, said: “The £842 million New South Glasgow Hospital Campus is the biggest single investment in NHS Scotland’s history. With the first stage of this ambitious flagship NHS project – the new state-of-the-art laboratory - already completed on time and below budget, Govan’s skyline is already changing. With the rest of the building programme on track for completion on or below budget and on time in 2015 we are already seeing staff want to move home in anticipation of their new place of work opening its doors.

“We work hard to support staff if their work base changes and this unique new service is a superb opportunity for our staff to obtain funding to make their house move a reality.

“As well as Hannah, so far, another five nurses have taken advantage of the scheme and have either moved in or are in the process of moving.”

Funding packages backed by NHSGGC, Scottish Government, NHS Credit Union, Glasgow Credit Union and Glasgow City Council are available at Cruden’s four developments in Govan, and as Hannah will eventually move from the RHSC to the New South Glasgow Hospital on its completion the Cruden development in Govan was an ideal choice.

Hannah and her partner Graeme had lost all confidence in the mortgage system prior to learning about the packages. They had been renting for 18 months in Partick before taking the decision to move in with Graeme’s parents in Lenzie to save money for a deposit to buy a home together.

However, with no savings behind them and most traditional mortgages requiring a 20% deposit, the young couple feared they would have to save for more than two years to be able to afford a home of their own.

Hannah’s partner Graeme saw Cruden’s advert in the paper in February and went to visit the development to find out more. They are now settled in their first home.

Hannah said: “Despite having very little deposit, we were able to secure a 90% mortgage with Glasgow Credit Union and the balance from NHS Credit Union.

“We instantly fell in love with the one bedroom apartment we’re over the moon to finally have our own place – it all happened so quickly.

“Our apartment is beautiful and what’s more, the funding package has made it affordable for us with a favourable interest rate.

“To top it all off, the apartment is situated across from the tube station which means I can easily get to Yorkhill and when I move to the new children’s hospital on the Southern campus I can walk to work very day.”

Robert Kelly, General Manager of the NHS Credit Union, said: “This partnership scheme has enabled the NHS Credit Union to diversify its lending product range and assist members with the costs of buying their own home.

“The innovative nature of the product and partnership has delivered a tangible and real difference to the members who have accessed it. This is especially relevant in the current economic climate where the pressures on accessing finance options for home ownership are so tough. It highlights the ability of credit unions, working in tandem with partner organisations, to offer a real and viable alternative to mainstream financial services.

“We look forward to more current and prospective members accessing this product in the future and we are delighted to see such major investment in the Southern General campus – the site where it all started for our credit union in 1998”.
