A new health and social work centre, which offers a unique model of joint services for Barrhead will open to the public on Monday 18 April.

The new £18 million Barrhead Health and Social Work Centre brings together health and social work services under the one roof for the first time serving some 25,000 local residents in state-of-the-art, fit for purpose facilities.

The centre is home to three GP practices and two dental practices as well as physiotherapy and podiatry services, health visitor and district nursing teams along with social work and home care services.  There will also be a day care centre for older people with its own entrance and garden.

Mental health services for the whole of East Renfrewshire will also be offered out of the new centre serving 90,000 people.

Director of the East Renfrewshire CHCP Julie Murray said:  “The opening of the new Barrhead Health and Care Centre which will be of huge benefit to the local community.

“This new state-of-the-art development will enable people to access the services they require more quickly and easily regardless of whether these are provided by the NHS or council.”

Chairman of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Andrew Robertson said:  “The new centre is a fine example of modern, coordinated health and social care providing excellent services in a bright well-lit facility which patients and staff can be proud of.  It will bring significant benefits to the people of Barrhead and I’m proud of what we and East Renfrewshire Council have achieved in developing this project together to jointly tackle a range of health and social work issues in this area.”

Health and social care convener, Councillor Douglas Yates said:  “The new Health and Social Care Centre is a facility for all East Renfrewshire residents. When it opens it will have a vital role to play in promoting healthy living, fighting health inequalities and helping build a strong community.

''These new premises will enable us to cater better for the health needs of local people, in a modern purpose built facility. It is important that practices move with the times, and in this new health centre we have a facility that’s fit for 21st century health care.”

The new Barrhead Health and Care Centre costs £18 million is joint development between NHSGGC and East Renfrewshire Council.  NHSGGC invested £15 million and East Renfrewshire Council invested £3 million in the project.

Public Partnership Forum (PPF) representative Anne Marie Kennedy said:  “I am happy to say the public have been considered at all stages of the project and will be delighted with the opening of our fantastic new Health and Care Centre.

“The building is light and airy with a colour code to help make the patient’s journey easy to navigate.  Having a variety of services, NHS and Council, in one easily accessible building will be a great help to the public.  Some members of the PPF have already had a walk round of the building and they were all impressed with size and the facilities being given to the public”

The Centre’s architects Jan Pratt and Justin De Syllas from Avanti Architects have worked closely with the CHCP, Council and local community representatives to create a bright, airy welcoming space.

All of the centre’s clinical accommodation is located on the ground and first floors and is organised around a triple height, top lit atrium.  Access to all of the clinical departments is through the atrium and each reception is identified with a different coloured canopy to make it easier for patients to find.

The waiting areas are located either in or directly off the atrium with views over the Levern River Valley Park and the hills to the rear of the building.  The atrium itself will be home to an information point and the space can also host small exhibitions and events.

The second floor of the building will not be accessible to patients or the public.  It will accommodate a range of local authority social services as well as a staff room with external staff roof terrace and meeting rooms.

The new centre has also been provided with a selection of purpose designed works of art.  One of the main pieces includes an exterior tree and nest by Scottish artists Iain Kettles and Susie Hunter at the main entrance.

Community artwork inspired by the concept of nests as a place for nurture and protection, referencing both the past and the present history of Barrhead has also been included.

The works aim to put the new centre and health and wellbeing at the heart of the community and promote the imaginative role that artists can play in the creation of inspiring places.
