Fours year olds from more than 58 nurseries in the east of Glasgow have taken part in a lunchbox design competition to raise awareness of happy healthy smiles.

An array of inspiring designs were created by the children which all centred on the theme of looking after your mouth in order to keep your body healthy.

The children were competing to have their design chosen to go on a lunchbox which will be given to every child in participating east end nurseries and who are starting P1 this year.

The winner was little Abbie McClure, age four, from Bridgeton Family Learning Centre, whose slogan ‘My carrot skips every day’ and creative design captured the imagination of the judges.

Abbie will attend a special ceremony with her class mates and children from other nurseries who took part in the scheme next month - national smile month – where all the children will be presented with their lunchboxes with Abbie’s design on the cover.

Debbie Connelly, Health Improvement Senior for Oral Health, said: “The lunchbox competition has been a tremendous success. It’s really made the children think about the importance or oral hygiene and the knock on effect for your whole body.

“This competition is just one example of the work being undertaken in partnership with the Oral Health Action Team and local nurseries to promote oral health and healthy eating.

“There are more than 58 nurseries in the east end which participate in our toothbrush scheme and it’s been a real delight to see them all get behind this fun initiative.”
