A state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit which offers mums and their babies the very best care is celebrating its first birthday.

Mums, dads and babies joined staff at the Southern General’s neonatal intensive care unit to celebrate the first birthday of the unit and its success in caring for seriously ill babies.

The neonatal unit has cared for more than 500 babies in the last year and the staff wanted to ensure it’s first birthday was shared with the mums and babies who have required significant support and medical input at the unit.

The Unit was part of a £28 million refurbishment of the Southern General’s maternity unit and provides a truly gold standard of healthcare on the Govan site. When the new £800 million South Glasgow Hospital Campus is completed in 2015 children’s, adult acute and maternity services will be all together on the one site in a world class facility.

Dr Lesley Jackson, Consultant Neonatologist, said: “All of the staff at the Unit are so proud of what we have achieved in our first year and wanted to celebrate with a few of our small patients from our first 12 months.”
