Staff from the Vale of Leven Hospital were, today, praised for their efforts following a fire in the Christie Ward last night.
The fire started in the early evening and as soon as it was discovered the alert was raised. While the fire service was quickly on the scene it was the heroic efforts of staff that ensured no-one was injured and the area around the ward was speedily evacuated.
A total of 13 mental health patients were moved from the Christie Ward and arrangements are now being made to transfer the patients to suitable alternative accommodation at Gartnavel Royal.
Robert Calderwood, Chief Executive sent his personal thanks to the staff today. He said: “This was a serious incident and the potential consequences were avoided due to the rapid actions of the local staff.
“We have robust contingency plans in place should an unfortunate incident like this occur and the staff remained calm and organised while putting those plans into action. This meant patients were moved away from the area of the fire quickly and safely and our thanks go to the staff for their tremendous efforts.”
