The foundations for a busy and vital future for the Vale of Leven are now well underway with many of the plans already taking shape.

Following the green light from the Cabinet Secretary last year to the ‘Vision for the Vale’ document, which detailed plans to ensure that vital health services stay at the Vale, medical, clinical and planning staff have been working together to put in place the final arrangements for the unscheduled care and rehabilitation models which were a major factor in the plans.

Work with local consultants and GP colleagues have proved extremely positive with a proposed model for unscheduled care near agreement.

The planning for both unscheduled care and rehabilitation models to work has included a consultant recruitment drive which is currently underway and will continue during March.

Work around the allocation of junior medical staffing and nursing staff are continuing and the allocation of capital monies has been identified to ensure the Vale has adequate beds to deal with the new models.

Once in place the new services will bring 18,350 additional patient attendances to the Vale, in turn ensuring that fewer local people will need to travel elsewhere for hospital care. In addition we will sustain over 70% of unscheduled medical admissions at the hospital.

Our commitment to establish a monitoring group which includes local representatives and service users and carers has also been fulfilled with the group charged with overseeing the development and delivery of the plans.

The group is Chaired by Bill Brackenridge and he can see the plans in the Vision document taking shape. He said: "The Vision for the Vale is an ambitious plan and although its implementation is still at an early stage, the monitoring group has been encouraged by the progress to date.

“We will continue to monitor developments to try to make sure that the Vision becomes reality."

Robert Calderwood, Chief Executive, NHSGGC, said: “An enormous amount of detailed planning has went into laying the foundations for the Vale’s exciting new future. Over the last few months my team, in partnership with the newly established monitoring group, have been working with clinical staff to prepare for and ensure the effective implementation of our plans for the hospital.

“We want to ensure that local people know how our plans for the Vale are progressing and our commitment to ensuring the long term future of the Vale.”
