Clostridium Difficile (C diff) Cases at Royal Alexandra Hospital

September 04, 2008 10:50 AM

An Outbreak Control Team has been established after the Royal Alexandra Hospital’s C-diff monitoring procedures identified a higher than expected number of cases in one ward of the hospital.

The Outbreak Control Team meeting was convened to investigate a rise to eight cases over a four week period.

One patient has sadly died and C-diff was noted as a contributory factor but not the main cause of death.

A second patient treated on the ward, confirmed as having C-diff, has also sadly died however this patient died of a serious underlying medical condition and their death was not related to C-diff.

A third patient has been discharged.

The remaining five patients are improving and are no longer showing any symptoms of C-diff but continue to be nursed in isolation. As a precautionary measure the ward is not admitting any new patients.

All appropriate infection control measures are in place.
