World Record Bid Ostrich Run to Help Sick Kids

August 31, 2007 2:24 PM

A group of runners going for a world record bid at this Sunday's Great Scottish Run is hoping to raise thousands of pounds for patients at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill. Marc Wynn, whose daughter was treated at the hospital as a baby, is leading the charge this Sunday, with a group of friends all dressed as ostriches!

Ten runners will be taking part in Sunday's Great Scottish Run dressed as ostriches, in the hope of setting a world record for the greatest number of race runners competing in fancy dress. The team have been in training for some time, including a number of sessions in their ostrich costumes, and hope to raise several thousand pounds. Checks have been carried out with the Guinness Book of World Records, who have confirmed that if the team complete this Sunday's race, they will have set the first ever World Record in the category.

Marc - who ran as Batman last year, coming third in the Superheroes category - explains the reason behind the fancy dress: "When our little girl was treated at the hospital, we were very impressed by the care she received and very grateful to the staff for all they did. I decided that I'd do all I could to raise money for the hospital - and this weekend that means dressing up as an ostrich and running the Great Scottish Run!

"Setting a World Record will be an absolutely unbelievable achievement and we've been assured that if all ten of us get on our ostrich gear and run on Sunday, we will have set the very first World Record. We're hoping that - taking into account sponsorship and donations - we might raise as much as £10,000. All of us are very proud that we're doing this for the hospital, and we hope we succeed in making a positive difference."

All money raised will be donated to the Yorkhill Children's Foundation, which aims to make time spent in the hospital less distressing for children and their families. Their Fundraising Manager Joan MacLeod is wishing the "ostriches" luck: "Yorkhill Children's Foundation is always delighted to have new supporters, and would like to welcome our feathered friends to the team.

"With their help, we will be able to make a stay in hospital that little bit easier for the children who come here for treatment, and no doubt put a smile back on their faces!"
