Statement on Salmonella Cases

The Environmental Health Section from West Dunbartonshire Council and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde can confirm they are investigating four confirmed and three suspected cases of salmonella linked to the Princess Rose Chinese Restaurant in Balloch.

The restaurant has been formally closed by West Dunbartonshire Council Environmental Health Section pending further investigation.

None of the cases are giving cause for concern as a result of the salmonella.

Dr Syed Ahmed, Consultant in Public Health, said: “We are working closely with West Dunbartonshire Council, Argyll and Bute Council and NHS Highland to identify any other potential cases as well as to identify the cause(s) of this outbreak.

“If anyone has visited the Princess Rose Restaurant in Balloch and feels unwell, they should contact their local GP or NHS24 in the first instance.”

What is Salmonella?
The Salmonella germ is a group of bacteria that can cause diarrhoeal illness in humans. They are microscopic living creatures that pass from the faeces of people or animals, to other people or other animals. It can be passed by person-to-person contact.

How can Salmonella infections be diagnosed?
Many different kinds of illnesses can cause diarrhoea, fever, or abdominal cramps. Determining that Salmonella is the cause of the illness depends on laboratory tests that identify Salmonella in the stools of an infected person. Once Salmonella has been identified, further testing can determine its specific type, and which antibiotics could be used to treat it.

How can Salmonella infections be treated?
Salmonella infections usually resolve in five to seven days and often do not require treatment unless the patient becomes severely dehydrated or the infection spreads from the intestines. Persons with severe diarrhoea may require rehydration, often with intravenous fluids. Antibiotics are not usually necessary unless the infection spreads from the intestines.

Precautions that can be taken to combat the spread of salmonella are washing hands thoroughly before preparing food and after going to the toilet.
