The money was raised by Breast Foot Forward – a charity that aims to make Scotland renowned for excellence in breast cancer research, diagnosis and care – and was the result of a sponsored walk undertaken by more than 1,000 people in Edinburgh last year.

Professor David George, Regius Professor of Surgery at the Western Infirmary, explained: "This welcomed funding will be shared between breast cancer researchers in the Department of Surgery at the Western Infirmary and those in the Beatson Oncology Centre, and will further important research work in a way that will investigate individualised cancer treatments.

"For example, researchers would study samples from various patients and look closely at the types of treatments that best suited them. In short, this could pave the way for giving individuals the treatment that's best for them in the future."

Professor George added simply: "And with Glasgow being at the heart of cancer treatment in the West of Scotland, we hope that many people will benefit from the research this funding will allow us to carry out."

Dr Sally Beattie, Chairman of Breast Foot Forward, who presented the cheque added: "We're delighted to be able to donate this money to such a worthwhile cause that's so close to our hearts. The fundraisers worked hard to reach the grand total and we're proud of their achievements."

Dr Beattie presented the cheque to the Beatson's Professor Alan Rodger, along with cancer specialists Dr Peter Canney and Professor David George.
