CANCER PREVENTION MESSAGE TARGETS SOUTHSIDE

January 17, 2005 3:14 PM

Three locations in Glasgow's southside are the chosen sites for a brand new project to deliver cancer prevention information to people living in Gorbals and Govanhill.

Gorbals Health Centre, Govanhill Health Centre and Moss Pharmacy in Crown Street, are all offering local people access to the information via touchscreen technology.

Developed by NHS Greater Glasgow and supported by a £125,000 Lottery grant made to the West of Scotland Regional Cancer Group, the brand new information system will officially be launched on Thursday, January 20, 2005 at Moss Pharmacy, 155 Crown Street, Glasgow.

Touchscreens at the Gorbals Health Centre and the Govanhill Health Centre will go live at the same time.

In addition to touchscreen technology, interested parties can also access the information via the website (www.activelypreventingcancer.org.uk ) and local libraries in Gorbals and Govanhill will also be promoting access to the website version through their 58 PCs.

So what kind of information can people access? There are five main topics:
* Healthy Eating
* Physical Activity
* Sensible Drinking
* Stopping Smoking
* Sun Protection

There are also links to related local services and information on where people can go for help and advice on healthy living, such as local healthy living projects.

NHS Greater Glasgow's Liz Grant, the project manager, said: "We know that our health messages don't always reach children and young people which is why we've opted for this more innovative approach.  By presenting the information in a format they can relate to, we hope to encourage children and young people as well as adults to make the healthy choices they need to make to lower the risk of contracting cancer in later life."

Liz revealed that they were particularly keen to reach out to those from Gorbals and Govanhill's ethnic communities.

She said: "One of the strengths of this project is its locality base with co-operation from a range of established agencies in the Gorbals and Govanhill area. We are working in partnership to adapt the messages for people who want local information which can make a real difference to their outlook".

In February, the new system will also include additional information on cancer screening and include text and audio translations in Urdu.
