Interview with Lorraine Hegarty

Lorraine Hegarty was happy to meet with Thelma Bench and Jeanette Hawthorn to talk about her current post as Out of Hours District Nurse. Lorraine told us that she applied for a 3 year nursing course at Glasgow Caledonia University. After completing the first year Lorraine took a year out to have her first child and then successfully completed a further 2 years. It was then Lorraine attended a Recruitment Fare at Langs Hotel in Glasgow whilst expecting her second child. After a lengthy chat with the Nursing Manager it was agreed Lorraine would apply for a post and at interview it was agreed if successful Lorraine could start work after her maternity leave was finished.

Lorraine particularly enjoys working as a District Nurse as this gives her a variety of tasks which involves meeting patients and caring for them by giving support and advice. Lorraine currently lives in Inverclyde and she previously worked as an Ultra Pure Water Technician when she wore a lovely boiler suit! Lorraine is much happier wearing her nurses uniform. To enter for the nursing course Lorraine was expected to have qualifications in English, Biology and Chemistry.

Lorraine is today’s modern woman who balances her working and family commitments and with the new family friendly policy in place this allows her to be flexible if required.

Nursing today involves working with multi-disciplinary teams and communication with doctors is much more encouraged. There are more duties for nursing staff that are much more technical.

The uniform today is more comfortable and practical to allow moving and handling. Training is very different which consists of 6 week blocks in a Hospital/Health Centre where you have a named mentor on every placement. Lorraine was delighted with her choice to move to a career in nursing and would advise anyone to consider.
